Strengthening Fathers is a community-based program that supports male identifying caregivers to ensure the safety and well-being of children, partners and other family members.

Fatherhood Matters is a program that supports male identifying caregivers to build skills and knowledge for positive family life; tools to support parenting & co-parenting; promote positive child development, well-being, and safety. It aims to help male identifying caregivers connect to resources that meet their needs across the social determinants of health and build positive social connections supports within their community.

Pop-up Community Programs offered through Strengthening Fathers and Fatherhood Matters are promoted locally and through social media.

Caring Dads

  • Program Description

  • Caring Dads is open to male identifying participants over the age of 18 who are in a caregiving role with a child under the age of 16.
  • Caring Dads is a group program that is delivered virtually or face-to-face depending on location.
  • The program is intensive and therapeutic in nature. It is for male identifying individuals who have been or continue to be abusive in their families and whose relationships with their children and children’s mother are hostile or highly conflictual. Individuals are not eligible for Caring Dads if a primary concern is the person’s perpetration of child sexual abuse.
  • Program Locations

  • Caring Dads is available in the Eastern, Northern and Western Regions of Nova Scotia.
  • How To Access The Program

  • Participants must be referred to Caring Dads by a community partner.

Foundation of Parenthood

  • Program Description

  • Foundation of Parenthood is open to male identifying caregivers over the age of 18 who are in a caregiving role with a child under the age of 16.
  • Foundation of Parenthood is a group program that is delivered face to face in Correctional facilities. The program is psycho educational. The program aims to: Increase the ability to make connections between personal / childhood experiences and the parenting role; Increase parental empathy and perspective-taking; Highlight participants knowledge and understanding of child development and behaviours; Discuss the present and long-term impact of parental behaviours /actions (ie positive and negative ) on the development of the children.
  • The program includes 9 sessions which are 2 hours each.
  • Program Locations

  • Foundation of Parenthood is available in Eastern and Western Regions of Nova Scotia.
  • How To Access The Program

  • Participants must be referred to the program by Corrections Canada.
