Our Privacy Policy

Family Service Nova Scotia manages information in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act of Nova Scotia. Information about this act is available on the Nova Scotia government’s web page and can be made available in our offices.

People participating in our services will be told by organization staff about their rights with regards to confidentiality and the limits of confidentiality.

Questions and/or complaints regarding privacy and confidentiality as they pertain to the programs and services delivered by FSNS may be directed to the organization’s Chief Executive Officer.

Information for Clients and Program Participants

All participants in programs operated by Family Service Nova Scotia and all recipients of organization services (hereafter referred to as service users) can expect that personal information provided to the organization will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.

However, under the following conditions we can be required by law to disclose information:

  • if a child or vulnerable person may be in need of protective services
  • if there is an immediate risk that someone is gong to hurt or kill themselves
  • if there is a danger or risk to others
  • subpoena or court order

We can share information with other professionals if service users provide consent for us to do so.

Non-identifying information will be included in organization reports and/or shared with funders

Information for Volunteers, Donors, and Supporters

Personal Information: This is any identifying information about an individual or group of individuals. FSNS collects and uses personal information solely for the purpose of providing services and developing an understanding of its service users. FSNS obtains personal information directly from the person to whom the information belongs and will limit the use of any personal information to what is needed for the purpose for which it was collected. Under no circumstances will FSNS sell, distribute or otherwise disclose personal information or contact lists to third party.

Website and Electronic Commerce: Wherever possible, we use password protocols and encryption software to protect personal and other information we receive during the course of organization activities.
